Hostile Sheep UX Research Process
Uncovering the friction that traditional research ignores.
Most digital research is designed to validate assumptions and optimize for the average user. We built our methodology to do the exact opposite. We seek out overlooked voices, audit systems for cognitive debt, and co-design alongside the people that have been left behind. Our research doesn't just collect data; it provides the objective, evidence-based blueprint needed to build safer, more resilient digital ecosystems.

Finding the truth in the margins
"Exclusion happens when we solve problems using our own biases. As designers, we must recognize that the people who face the greatest barriers are the ones who can teach us the most about building better systems." - Kat Holmes
Much of the research we see organizations doing relies on generalized surveys, focus groups, and interviews that naturally cater to the loudest, most typical voices. This optimizes for the average user and often misses the hidden friction experienced by those who actually need the system the most. To counter this, we completely change who's in the room.
- We actively recruit participants from the margins, bringing the people most impacted by your system's complexity directly into the conversation.
- We facilitate collaborative co-design sessions that give users agency, turning them from passive research subjects into active problem solvers.
- We dig past the surface-level symptoms to uncover the root causes of systemic friction, ensuring our solutions actually protect those most at risk.

Measuring the impact of friction
"Every question that pops into a user's head adds to their cognitive workload, distracting them from the task at hand. The fact that the people who built the site didn't care enough to make things obvious quickly erodes confidence and trust." - Steve Krug
When users navigate complex, high-stakes environments (like healthcare portals or financial applications) they are often carrying a heavy mental load. We rigorously test your existing digital experiences to identify cognitive debt. This includes pinpointing the unnecessary steps, confusing jargon, and systemic dead ends that drain a user's agency and erode their trust.
By treating this kind of cognitive friction as a measurable metric, we provide objective evidence of exactly where your system is breaking down. This removes internal bias and stakeholder guesswork from the equation, giving your team a clear, undeniable mandate for change.

Tracing the root cause behind the symptom
"Design research is not about validating the feature you already decided to build. It is about having the humility to discover if you are even solving the right problem in the first place." - Laura Klein
The most expensive mistake an organization can make is perfectly executing the wrong solution. Traditional research often falls into this trap, asking users to validate an existing idea rather than uncovering their actual underlying needs.
- Instead of redesigning a progress bar because users are abandoning a multi-step form, we determine the cognitive load of the questions themselves. We uncover the reason users felt overwhelmed or unsafe answering the questions in the first place.
- Instead of rearranging a navigation menu to make things more findable, we investigate the underlying taxonomy to ensure the interface is speaking the users language.
- Instead of adding a secure icon to the checkout to address trust issues, we investigate the holistic user journey to understand where and why the organization lost the users trust.
Introducing the new Hostile Sheep
We’ve always been here to challenge what needs challenging and protect what matters most. What’s changed is how clearly we see the systems we’re part of and how intentionally we choose to engage with them. Hostile Sheep is no longer just our name. It's our stance. If you'd like to know what we stand for, we wrote it down.
